The Circumetnea trains in Sicily provide a way of reaching some of the remote locations around Mount Etna.
Starting at Riposto, a coastal town to the south of Giardini Naxos and Taormina, the Circumetnea runs inland before circling around the base of Mount Etna. Along the 110 kilometre route, the train passes through the dozen or so villages on the slopes of the volcano. It takes just over an hour to reach the halfway point at Randazzo where you can change trains if you want to carry on and see more villages. |
Most tourists get off the rain at Randazzo, have a look around the town, perhaps have some lunch and then make their way back to Riposto on the coast. The longer route is to switch trains at Randazzo and carry on to Paternò which is around an hour and a half away from there.
