Beaches of Sicily
Latest update: 9 February 2024
So numerous and wonderful are the beaches of Sicily, that a series of different categories are required in order to display them all.
Among the pages of this website there are hundreds of pages dedicated to the different types of beaches in Sicily; we've got a page for the larger seaside towns or municipalities and another section for the slightly smaller beach resorts which are frazioni rather than official comuni. Before we look at the individual beaches, let's focus on the areas which have the largest concentration of them. |

The Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro is situated on Sicily's north-west coast, between Trapani and Palermo. The reserve is a popular hiking route next to the sea where there are around eight great beaches, including highlights such as Cala Capreria and Cala Tonnarella dell'Uzzo.
Sicily's most famous beach can be found a long way from its mainland but whatever inconvenience is caused by that pales into insignificance once you get there. The Spiaggia dei Conigli or Rabbit Beach on the island of Lampedusa regularly wins awards and was recently voted the best beach in the world by Tripadvisor. It's such a beautiful beach that the likes of Cala Guitgia and Cala Croce just a few kilometres away hardly get a mention, yet they themselves occupy the Italy Review list of best beaches in Italy.

Taormina is a hill town of astonishing beauty whose Ancient Greek Theatre overlooked by the volcanic Mount Etna in the distance is one of the most enduring images of Sicily. Down at ground level it also has a series of four beaches with the famous Isola Bella among them. There are various places in Taormina where you can view the beaches from above and they make for some wonderful photos. Of the other three beaches of Taormina, the most popular is Mazzarò which lies just around the headland from Isola Bella.
Sicily boasts a number of island groups such as the Pelagie Islands to which the aforementioned Lampedusa belongs, and its to another of these island groups that we go to find another selection of wonderful beaches. Of the three Aegadian Islands, it's Favignana that gets most of the visitors and with its coastline of crystalline waters it's easy to see why. Among the best here are Cala Rossa and Bue Marino Beach.

Now we get to the stand-alone beaches that don't belong to any particular collection but are also among the best that Sicily can offer. We start with La Tonnara di Scopello which is situated very close to the Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro and this is another one that's out of the top drawer with its sea stacks marking a bay of exceptional beauty.
The so-called Scala dei Turchi is as much a fascinating natural phenomenon as a beach where you go to relax but it fulfils both of those desires easily. The Turks Staircase as it translates to, is a cliff that gradually slopes down into the sea where the rocks have naturally formed into large steps. The name refers to the period where Sicily was constantly raided by Turkish pirates and this was nature's way of helping the invaders out. Aside from the rocks which are great fun to walk around, there are two large swathes of sandy beach either side and the whole area is fringed with bright aquamarine water.

You only start to appreciate the natural beauty of Marinello Beach when you view it from the Tindari Sanctuary on the hill above. Punta Marinello is a short walk from the beach resort of Oliveri on Sicily's north coast and a place where you can escape the summer crowds.
The peninsula occupied by the resort of San Vito Lo Capo features heavily on this page with the Riserva dello Zingaro and La Tonnara di Scopello just a short distance away. With Macari Beach we find yet another with that x-factor water and dreamlike landscape.
