The list of Sicily's Borghi Più Belli d'Italia now extends to eighteen of the region's prettiest hill towns and villages. The name of the association that runs the scheme translates as Italy's Most Beautiful Borgos and it's that last word that needs requires some explanation.
A borgo (or borghi plural) is generally a village with historic roots or a smaller area of a larger town where the homes are huddled together in a close community. The borghi are often in hill towns that were built for a defensive purpose at a time when there was an almost constant threat from outside influences. One modern-day effect of these borghi is that they keep local traditions alive. |
